First day on the job (Morning)
[This is cross posted on yii.wduyck.com]
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
Sure it’s a little cliché, however I am hoping that this is the case. In the past at least this has been true of my volunteer work. As well as at the university (I was a teaching assistant of sorts). Even when I worked at Homebase this held true to some degree.
There are many sayings to inspire and motivate people in their jobs. This is not something I feel I need. I don’t need to be inspired, or motivated, by a saying to prepare me for what I am about to do. Having had over 7 years experience with the community I now work for, I know for a fact that the community is all the inspiration, and motivation I need. The community combined with a kick ass mission. Promote openness, innovation & opportunity on the Web
I don’t know what the day will hold for me (I’m on a train to work right now so it’s all yet to come). What I do know is that if I was any more excited I’d die.
An ulterior motive?
Well… not a sinister or bad one. My working at Mozilla will help me to a degree. Quite literally. This is a part of my Year In Industry, which in short is a year out of studies where I must work somewhere. At the end of it I write a report on what I’ve learned, and it goes towards my degree.
Other than this tiny indiscretion I assure you that everything is above board. I’m thrilled to be able to work at Mozilla. The chance to work full time for the betterment of the web is an honor.
Still a volunteer?
Yes and no. It’s a hard line to draw, but there is definitely going to be things I do that are in that grey area of work, and not work. Where it’s still all about Mozilla.
What this internship means to me is that I now don’t have to split my focus between my studies, Mozilla, and my social life. Now I get to split it between Mozilla, Mozilla, and a social life (shock horror a geek with a social life!).
More to come
So I’m now going to be more active than I’ve ever been, or even had the opportunity to be. This includes blogging. I’ve now got two blogs that I am going to maintain. One for my university, and one to let the Mozillaverse know what I’ve been working on / will be.
I’ll also be on a number of community calls, hacking on code, and much more.
As for some kind of a schedule… you can expect a blog post every Friday on my main blog, and at least once a week (no set date) on my university blog.
In the mean time… I’ve got to start working, and stop being excited to start, and start being excited to be working 😃.
Edit:
Oh I nearly forgot to ask my question (well I’m going to be cheeky and ask two).
What was your first day at your new job like?
What advice do you have for someone starting a new job?
